Where did adaptive habit come from?
Let’s rewind to 2019…
Let’s rewind to 2019 where it all began, in Florida. And can I just say how good it feels to be writing again? I missed it!
In 2019, I was dreaming of starting a health & wellness-related business. So I started with a blog. I wrote about health and wellness topics that were mostly related to yoga. I was constantly thinking of business names because I wanted to make it ‘official’. I would spend my days randomly writing ideas in my notes section on my phone or a piece of paper as they popped into my head. I quickly came up with the ‘habit’ part of the name, but I really wanted to make it original. I wanted the name to signify how I felt and how I lived my life. I believe that creating good habits are the key to living a healthy lifestyle. It took me a long time before I finalized the name and I am going to share the process of how I thought of it.
I was working at the Mote Aquarium and spent most of my days thinking about what to call my ‘blog/business’. I was dedicated to coming up with a creative and unique name that symbolized my lifestyle and mentality. I was bouncing back and forth between ‘The Healthy Habit’, ‘Life Habits’, etc. but NONE of them felt like the one. Until the word adapt popped into my head. I remember looking at the stingrays and thinking about where they came from and how they must have adapted to life at the bottom of the ocean. When I thought of the word adapt, it instantly clicked! This would be the name of my business. I didn’t know what my business was going to be exactly, but I knew that it would turn into something that I envisioned. I looked up the words ‘adapt’ and ‘habit’ by googling the words with definition after them (as we all do when we want a solid defining explanation to a word). I turned adapt into an adjective to that I could use it in the name. Adaptive Habit was created and has been my space of creativity ever since. Let me share the definitions with you so you can get a better look into what I was thinking:
Adaptive: able to change or adjust to suit changing conditions (hello, humanity)
Habit: a settled or regular tendency or practice (again, hello humanity)
Okay, so now that we are all on the same page with the backstory of Adaptive Habit - let me fill you in on the details of why is resonated so much with me. We live life and survive by making habits that allow us to adjust to everyday life. When we need to modify or learn new ways, we adjust our behaviors and change our habits in order to grow. Otherwise, we stay the same. And you’ve heard the saying ‘nothing ever stays the same’. Because it’s true. We have to adapt. We have to change. And we have to create habits that allow us to do so.
So we make a habit out of adapting to our world. We create practices that help us adjust to our life as it is today. This happens in every aspect of life — your daily routine, your yoga practice, your personal life, your professional one, and most importantly —your relationship with yourself. And that’s why Adaptive Habit embodies and personifies who I am as a person. I started embracing more changes in the years leading up to creating my brand and I feel deeply tied to it. It represents how I got here, who I am, and how I live my life. When I started my spray tan business in 2024, I thought about coming up with a new name that included ‘tanning’ or ‘spray tans’ but Adaptive Habit just felt right to stick with. I tagged on Studio at the end because I wanted to create a space within the brand name. In October 2024, my twin sister and I opened an online clothing boutique (think comfy & neutral clothing) and we decided to name it Adaptive Habit, because the brand just resonates.
If you’ve been following along on my journey since the beginning — thank you for supporting me. And if you are new here, thank you and welcome! I am so grateful for the opportunities that have led me to where I am and I am so happy to be writing again. I look forward to sharing more soon! The next blog post will be about starting a business from scratch and all about learning as you go!
With love & light,
Kristyn
